TL;DR
Afghan nationals need a Schengen visa, on an Afghan passport or a UK travel document. The UK refugee travel document is recognised by every Schengen state; a Certificate of Travel is not accepted by Malta and restricted by five others. You apply in the UK with an eVisa share code or BRP, and allow more than 15 days: Afghanistan is on the EU's prior-consultation list. We prepare and book it for £99. The fixed facts:
| Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) | 2026 |
|---|---|
| Visa fee (adult) | €90 |
| Visa fee (child 6 to 11) | €45 |
| Visa fee (child under 6) | Free |
| Maximum stay | 90 days in any rolling 180-day period |
| Standard processing | 15 calendar days (up to 45 in some cases) |
| Travel insurance, minimum cover | €30,000 |
| Passport | Issued within 10 years; valid 3+ months beyond your trip |
| Member states | 29 countries |
Do Afghan nationals need a Schengen visa?
Yes, on any document. Afghanistan is on the EU's list of nationalities that need a visa to cross the Schengen external border (Annex I of Regulation 2018/1806). Holders of a refugee travel document, a stateless person's travel document or a Certificate of Travel issued by the UK also need a visa, because the regulation applies the visa requirement to recognised refugees and stateless persons who reside in a third country that is itself outside the EU, and the UK is one.
If you live outside the UK, this page is not for you: you apply where you legally live. A UK visit visa is not residence.
Which document are you travelling on?
Many Afghans in the UK hold a UK-issued travel document rather than an Afghan passport. The EU keeps a table of which travel documents each Schengen state recognises for crossing the external border and endorsing with a visa, updated with member states' notifications to 16 October 2026. For the UK's documents it shows:
| Document | Recognised by |
|---|---|
| Refugee travel document (1951 Convention), blue | Every Schengen state, without conditions |
| Stateless person's travel document (1954 Convention) | Every Schengen state, without conditions |
| Certificate of Travel, brown | Not recognised by Malta. Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Bulgaria and Portugal recognise it only for exit to return to the UK, which means no visit visa. Spain recognises it only if it allows the holder to return to the UK with no time limit. Every other state recognises it |
| Afghan ordinary passport | Every Schengen state; Denmark, Germany, France and Sweden do not accept non-machine-readable ones |
So a refugee travel document holder can apply to any country by the main-destination rule. A Certificate of Travel holder whose main destination is Malta cannot apply there; one whose main destination is Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Bulgaria, Portugal or Spain should read the condition carefully and, if in doubt, check with that consulate before booking. The full guide to applying on a UK document is Schengen visa with a UK refugee travel document.
Whichever document you hold, it must be valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area, with two blank pages, and the Visa Code's rule that the document was issued within the last 10 years applies. Gov.uk says a refugee travel document is normally valid for up to 10 years if you are settled, and a Certificate of Travel for up to 5 years. Do not book travel until the document is in your hands.
Proving you live in the UK
Consulates take an application from a non-EU national who legally resides in their district. You prove that with:
- an eVisa share code from your UKVI account on gov.uk ("view and prove your immigration status"), with the printed status page and your date of birth. Generate it close to the appointment; codes expire. See the eVisa share code guide.
- a valid BRP card, front and back, if you still hold one
- the visa vignette in your passport, for a recent arrival
People resettled under the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme received indefinite leave to remain, and ARAP is a separate scheme with its own grants; in both cases the status is held as an eVisa and proved with a share code. See Schengen visa for ILR holders. We do not advise on UK immigration status; if yours is uncertain, speak to an IAA-registered adviser before you book anything.
Why Afghan applications can take longer: prior consultation
Under Article 22 of the Visa Code, a Schengen state may require other states' central authorities to consult it before a visa is issued to nationals of certain countries. The European Commission's list includes Afghanistan, and separately refugees and stateless persons as categories, so at least one member state asks to be consulted on every Afghan application, with seven calendar days to reply. The 15-day standard is therefore more likely to stretch, the Visa Code allows up to 45 days, and the consulate may ask for extra documents. Lodge up to six months before travel, and at least four weeks ahead.
Which consulate do Afghans in the UK apply to?
The main destination: the country where you will spend the most nights, or the country of first entry if the nights are equal. Choosing a country for its appointment calendar is a refusal ground. Once issued, the visa covers the whole Schengen area. Certificate of Travel holders: check the recognition table above first.
| Destination | Who takes the file | UK centres | Centre fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spain | BLS International | London, Manchester, Edinburgh | £15 |
| France | TLScontact, after the France-Visas form | London, Manchester, Edinburgh | about £45 (estimate) |
| Italy | VFS Global | London, Manchester, Edinburgh | about £32 (estimate) |
| Germany | TLScontact, waiting list in London and Manchester since 1 June 2026 | London and Manchester for England, Wales and Northern Ireland; Edinburgh for Scotland | about £35 (estimate) |
| Netherlands | VFS Global | London, Edinburgh | £18 |
| Greece | GVC World | London, Manchester | £26, prepaid online |
| Portugal | VFS Global | London, Manchester, Edinburgh | £33 |
Every country is in the cost index. Guides: Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Netherlands.
What documents do Afghan applicants need?
The standard Schengen document set, with the points that matter here:
| Document | What to check |
|---|---|
| Travel document or passport | As above; bring any old passport or document with previous visas |
| UK residence | eVisa share code and status printout, BRP or vignette |
| Bank statements | The last 3 months of a UK account in your name, every page, with a balance that fits your income and the trip; explain any large deposit |
| Employer letter or benefits evidence | A job: title, start date, salary, approved leave, return date. Studying: an enrolment letter. Not working: say so in the cover letter and show how the trip is funded, for example a sponsor's letter and statements |
| Afghan documents | A tazkira, marriage certificate or other Afghan document used as evidence needs a certified English translation |
| Trip | Flight reservation, accommodation for every night, insurance with at least €30,000 of cover, a cover letter; for a family visit, the host's invitation and their status in that country |
How do you prove you will return to the UK?
Consulates refuse when they doubt the applicant will leave Schengen and come back to the UK. For someone with indefinite leave the return case is strong on paper, and the file should show it: the share code with no expiry, a tenancy or council-tenancy agreement, children at school, a job or course, and family here. Thin or inconsistent ties and funds evidence is the leading refusal reason from the UK, not nationality or the type of document. See why Schengen visas are refused and the proof of funds guide.
Fees from the UK for Afghan applicants
The consulate fee is set EU-wide and is the same for a passport and a travel document: €90 for an adult (about £81 at the consulate's own rate), €45 for a child aged 6 to 11, free under 6. Poland's embassy charges £79 and £40 in pounds with no centre fee. The centre adds its own fee, from £15 for Spain to about £45 for France, and insurance costs from about £12. Applying yourself costs about £91 to £138 per adult, paid at the centre on the day; a refusal generally does not refund the consulate fee.
If we prepare and book it, our service fee is £99 for the first applicant and £69 for each extra person on the same trip, up to five per order. Official fees are paid per person at the centre and never through us.
Refusal rates and timing
The Commission's figures are by consulate, not by nationality or document. For files lodged in the UK in 2025: Spain refused 6.1% of 138,195, France 8.5% of 129,940, Italy 6.0% of 18,956, Germany 3.2% of 32,725, the Netherlands 1.0% of 25,711, Portugal 7.3% of 21,015 and Greece 24.6% of 36,089; see the UK refusal rates page. Standard processing is 15 calendar days from the appointment, up to 45; with prior consultation, plan for the longer figure. France's three UK centres allocate appointments from a queue (London and Manchester since 1 August 2026, Edinburgh since 11 September 2026) and Germany runs a waiting list since 1 June 2026; see appointments.

Common questions
- 01
Do Afghan citizens need a Schengen visa?
Yes. Afghanistan is on the EU's list of nationalities that need a visa for the Schengen area, so every Afghan passport holder needs a short-stay (Type C) visa. A UK refugee travel document, stateless person's document or Certificate of Travel is also visa-required under the Visa Code, so the answer is the same whichever document you travel on.
- 02
Can I apply for a Schengen visa with a UK refugee travel document?
Yes. The EU's table of recognised travel documents lists the UK's 1951 Convention travel document as recognised by every Schengen state, so any consulate in the UK can place a visa in it. The document must be valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area, and the consulate will still ask for proof of your UK status, funds and ties.
- 03
Which countries accept a UK Certificate of Travel?
Most, but not all. In the EU's table, Malta does not recognise the UK Certificate of Travel; Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Bulgaria and Portugal recognise it only for exit to return to the UK, so they will not issue a visit visa in it; Spain recognises it only if it allows the holder to return to the UK with no time limit. Every other Schengen state recognises it. Check the table for your destination before you book.
- 04
I was resettled under ACRS or ARAP. What status proof do I send?
People resettled under the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme received indefinite leave to remain, which is held as an eVisa. Generate a share code in your UKVI account on gov.uk, print the status page and give the code and your date of birth to the centre. If you still hold a valid BRP, present it too. We cannot advise on UK immigration status; an IAA-registered adviser or solicitor can.
- 05
Is my Afghan passport accepted by Schengen consulates?
The EU's table lists the Afghan ordinary passport as recognised by every Schengen state, with one condition: Denmark, Germany, France and Sweden do not accept non-machine-readable Afghan passports. The passport must be issued within 10 years, valid three months beyond the trip and have two blank pages. Afghan diplomatic and service passports issued after 15 August 2021 are not recognised by Czechia and Romania.
- 06
How much is a Schengen visa for an Afghan national from the UK?
€90 for an adult, about £81 at the consulate's own rate, €45 for a child aged 6 to 11, free under 6, whichever document you hold. Poland's embassy charges £79 in pounds. The centre adds £15 to about £45 depending on the country, and you need insurance with at least €30,000 of cover. Our service fee, if we prepare and book it, is £99, and £69 for each extra traveller.
