Where the money goes
Three costs, only one of them fixed
The €90 consulate fee is set EU-wide and identical for every destination (€45 for children 6–12, free under 6). The visa-centre service fee is what varies: each country outsources UK applications to VFS Global, TLScontact, BLS or GVC at its own price — and Poland and Luxembourg take applications directly, with no centre fee at all. Add mandatory travel insurance (≥€30,000 cover) and you have the real DIY total.
The full fee anatomy is in Schengen visa fees explained, and we compared what UK services charge in our June 2026 price survey. Planning the trip itself? Check your days with the 90/180-day calculator.
Common questions
- How much does a Schengen visa cost from the UK in 2026?
- Per adult: the fixed €90 consulate fee (about £81), plus the visa application centre's service fee (typically £20–£45 in the UK; £0 for Poland and Luxembourg, which take applications directly), plus mandatory travel insurance from about £10–£12. A realistic DIY total is £113–£140 per adult, depending on the destination.
- How much is the Schengen visa fee for children?
- The consulate fee is €45 (about £41) for children aged 6–12 and free for children under 6. The visa-centre service fee and travel insurance are usually still payable per child, so a child's total isn't zero — this calculator breaks it down per age band.
- Why does the cost vary by destination country?
- The €90 consulate fee is identical across all Schengen states, but each country outsources UK applications to a different visa centre (VFS Global, TLScontact, BLS International or GVC World) with its own service fee. Poland and Luxembourg take applications directly at the embassy, so they have no centre fee at all and are the cheapest from the UK.
- What does a done-for-you Schengen visa service cost on top?
- Our done-for-you service is one all-in payment per destination — £143 to £175 per adult — which already includes the €90 consulate fee, the centre fee and insurance (we pay them on your behalf) plus the full preparation: forms, document pack and appointment booking. Of the UK services we surveyed in June 2026, that was the lowest published all-in price.
- Can the €90 consulate fee be reduced or refunded?
- No service can reduce the €90 — it's fixed by EU rules. It's also not refunded if the visa is refused, which is why getting the application right first time matters more than shaving pennies off the extras.
