Questions people ask before paying
- Who needs a Japan visa from the UK?
- Anyone living in the UK whose passport is not on Japan's visa-exemption list: Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Nigerian, Ghanaian, Kenyan, Filipino, Chinese, Vietnamese, Nepalese, Egyptian and South African nationals among others. The exemption follows the passport, not your UK status. British and EU passports visit without a visa.
- What does the £99 cover, and what do I still pay?
- The £99 is our service fee for the first applicant, with £69 for each additional applicant on the same order: the application form completed with you, your document pack, your embassy or consulate appointment booked with you, and a written summary for the day. You pay the official visa fee when the visa is issued: £77 single entry or £154 multiple entry, £4 for Indian nationals, and nothing for Pakistani, Bangladeshi or Filipino nationals. There is no outsourced centre, so those are the only official costs.
- Where do I apply?
- In person at the Consular Section of the Embassy of Japan in London, or at the Consulate General in Edinburgh if you live in Scotland, the North East of England or Cumbria. London appointments are booked on the embassy's booking site up to four weeks ahead, one slot per family or group; Edinburgh one day to two weeks ahead, one slot per application. Edinburgh takes the fee in cash only.
- How long does it take?
- About five working days once the application is accepted, on the embassy's own figure. The appointment comes first, so the whole run depends on the next free slot; our desk logs the earliest one it has seen at the top of this page.
- Can you guarantee the visa?
- No, and nobody honest can. The embassy decides. What we do is make the form right and the file complete, and if your application is not prepared within 24 hours of your complete documents and details, or your appointment not booked within 3 working days of your complete file subject to availability, you get the service fee back.
