Lithuania through VFS Global
Lithuania uses VFS Global, and unusually it offers four UK centres — London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Cardiff — which gives Welsh and Scottish applicants a closer option than most Schengen countries. Applications are by appointment only, with slots typically released in weekly batches that fill within minutes. Note that the Edinburgh and Cardiff centres may add a user-pay surcharge on top of the usual VFS service charge and the €90 consulate fee, whereas London and Manchester generally do not — worth checking before you choose where to book. An EHIC or GHIC card does not meet Lithuania's insurance rule; you need a certificate showing €30,000+ of cover valid across Schengen.
When to apply to Lithuania
Apply to Lithuania only if it's your main destination — where you'll spend the most nights — or your first point of entry if your trip is split evenly (see which country to apply to). A Vilnius city break makes Lithuania the country to apply to. If you're touring the Baltics and will spend more nights in Latvia or Estonia, apply where most of your trip falls. Lithuania has been a full Schengen member since 2007, so the visa covers the whole area.
What you'll need
The standard Schengen document set: a passport issued within the last 10 years and valid at least 3 months beyond your trip, the completed application, a recent photo, proof of UK residence (UK immigration status with a share code), confirmed travel and accommodation bookings, an itinerary, recent bank statements, €30,000+ travel insurance, and strong evidence you'll return to the UK — the leading reason these applications are refused for UK-resident non-EU nationals. Grab a VFS appointment as soon as slots open.
