TL;DR
To get a Sweden Schengen visa from the UK you apply through VFS Global (London or Edinburgh): complete the online application, book a VFS appointment, and attend to give biometrics and submit documents. Sweden runs only two UK centres, so book early — especially for winter aurora season.

How to apply
- Complete the application on VFS Global's Sweden visa portal for the UK and pay the fee.
- Book a VFS Global appointment in London or Edinburgh.
- Prepare your documents — see the full Schengen document checklist.
- Attend your appointment to give biometrics (fingerprints + photo) and submit.
- Wait for the decision — 15 calendar days once Sweden's Migration Agency has your file, up to 45, plus courier transit.
Only two UK centres — why that matters
Unlike most Schengen countries, Sweden operates just two VFS Global centres in the UK: London and Edinburgh (there is no Manchester option). If you live in the north of England, Edinburgh or London will be your nearest centre, so factor travel into your plans and check both for appointment slots. Your application is then couriered to the Swedish Migration Agency for the decision; that transit — about two days from London and three from Edinburgh — sits outside the 15-day processing clock, which only starts once Sweden physically receives your passport.
When to apply to Sweden
Apply to Sweden only if it's your main destination — where you'll spend the most nights — or your first point of entry if your trip is evenly split (see which country to apply to). A Stockholm city break or a trip to Swedish Lapland for the northern lights makes Sweden the country to apply to. If you'll spend more nights in another Schengen country, apply there instead — applying to the wrong country is a common refusal reason.
When to apply — and the winter rush
You can lodge up to 6 months before travel and at least 15 days before. Sweden sees a strong winter spike: aurora-hunting trips to Abisko and Kiruna, plus Christmas-market city breaks, push December–February demand high and VFS slots fill fast across both centres. Booking early is the single best way to avoid a last-minute scramble.
What you'll need
The standard Schengen document set: a passport issued within the last 10 years and valid at least 3 months beyond your trip, the completed application, a recent photo, proof of UK residence, confirmed travel and accommodation bookings, an itinerary, recent bank statements, €30,000+ travel insurance, and strong evidence you'll return to the UK — the leading reason these applications are refused for UK-resident non-EU nationals.
