TL;DR
To get a Finland Schengen visa from the UK you apply through VFS Global (London, Manchester or Edinburgh): complete the online application, book a VFS appointment, and attend to give biometrics and submit documents. Finland's Lapland season drives heavy winter demand, so book early.

When to apply to Finland
Apply to Finland only if it's your main destination — where you'll spend the most nights — or your first point of entry if your trip is evenly split (see which country to apply to). A Helsinki city break or a trip to Finnish Lapland — Rovaniemi, the Santa Claus Village, husky safaris and the northern lights — makes Finland the country to apply to. If you'll spend more nights in another Schengen country, apply there instead; applying to the wrong country is a common refusal reason.
When to apply — the Lapland winter peak
You can lodge up to 6 months before travel and at least 15 days before. Finland sees one of the sharpest winter spikes of any Schengen country: December–February trips to Lapland for Christmas, the aurora and snow activities push VFS appointment demand to its highest. If you're travelling over the festive period, book the moment your dates are firm and check all three cities for slots.
What you'll need
The standard Schengen document set: a passport issued within the last 10 years and valid at least 3 months beyond your trip, the completed application, a recent photo, proof of UK residence, confirmed travel and accommodation bookings, an itinerary, recent bank statements, €30,000+ travel insurance, and strong evidence you'll return to the UK — the leading reason these applications are refused for UK-resident non-EU nationals.
