What it costs

Malta may be one of the smallest Schengen states, but its visa costs from the UK are entirely standard: applications go through VFS Global, and the Maltese contract carries a £27.38 service fee, verified against the official VFS Malta page on 24 June 2026. That puts Malta in the middle of the UK's Schengen price table.

As with every Schengen application, the biggest line never moves: the €90 consulate fee is set by EU rules, the same for Malta as for any other member state, beyond the reach of any discount, and non-refundable if the decision goes against you. Families get meaningful relief on it: children aged 6 to 11 pay €45, and children under 6 pay nothing. The insurance line is the legal minimum of €30,000 medical cover for the whole trip, and compliant policies for a short holiday start from about £12.

What can add to the cost

The figure that dwarfs every extra, though, is a refusal: about £108 in consulate and centre fees that stay spent whatever the outcome, plus whatever you had already booked. Nothing on the VFS extras menu costs as much as an application that fails.

Cheaper and pricier alternatives

If your trip could legitimately centre elsewhere, there are savings and premiums either side of Malta. The Netherlands totals about £111 per adult, roughly £10 less, because VFS charges just £18 on the Dutch contract. Portugal, on the same operator, runs about £126 thanks to its £32.85 fee. The rule that governs the choice is fixed, though: you must apply to your main destination, the country where you will spend the most nights, so Malta's figure applies when Malta is the heart of the trip.
