How to Upload Documents to UKVCAS for In-Country UK Visa Applications

Step-by-step guide to using UKVCAS (Sopra Steria) for UK visa biometrics and document upload — appointments, file limits, common pitfalls.

TL;DR

UKVCAS (Sopra Steria) is the in-country UK visa biometrics and document upload service. After paying the UKVI fee, you book a UKVCAS appointment and upload supporting documents online — capped at 6 MB per file with silent rejection above the limit. Bundle and compress before uploading to avoid frustrating loops.

How to upload documents to UKVCAS

  1. Pay the UKVI visa fee through the gov.uk online application
  2. You're redirected to UKVCAS to book a biometrics appointment
  3. Choose a service point — usually the closest to you; same-day and weekend slots cost extra
  4. Create your UKVCAS account using the same email as your UKVI application
  5. Book the appointment — typical wait is 1-4 weeks; faster slots cost £100-£300 extra
  6. Bundle your documents using our free Bundler in the canonical UKVI order
  7. Compress if needed — use our Compressor for the 6 MB UKVCAS limit (we recommend targeting 5 MB for safety margin)
  8. Upload through UKVCAS portal — drag and drop or click to choose; one or many files
  9. Refresh the page after each upload to verify the file actually attached
  10. Attend the appointment — bring your passport, BRP if held, and the appointment confirmation
  11. Submit your application — UKVI processes once biometrics are enrolled and documents are uploaded

What UKVCAS appointments look like

Service points are usually small offices in shared business centres. The appointment itself takes 30-60 minutes:

  • Check-in with passport and appointment confirmation
  • Photo and fingerprints — quick, painless
  • Optional document scanning at the centre — costs extra; we recommend uploading online instead
  • Optional self-service printing if you forgot anything

Standard appointments are free to book. Premium service slots (out-of-hours, weekends, "concierge") cost £100-£500 — useful for compressed timelines but not necessary for most applicants.

File size and format

UKVCAS file requirements:

  • Maximum: 6 MB per file (silently enforced)
  • Format: PDF (preferred), JPG, PNG
  • Resolution: 300 DPI for documents with fine print
  • Colour: Required for passport, BRP, photos; greyscale OK for text documents

Multi-page documents should be PDFs (not multiple JPGs). The portal's interface is awkward with many files per category — bundling into one PDF per category is much smoother.

Common UKVCAS issues

File silently fails to attach

The single most common UKVCAS issue. The upload UI shows progress, completes, but the file doesn't appear in the document list. Causes:

  • File over 6 MB (silent rejection — no error)
  • File takes too long (network timeout — no clear message)
  • File format not strictly accepted (e.g. uploaded as DOCX accidentally)

Fix: stay well under 6 MB (target 5 MB). Refresh after each upload to confirm. Re-upload anything missing.

Wrong category for a document

Some UKVCAS upload pages categorise documents (passport, financial, etc.). Uploading the wrong file in the wrong category may flag missing documents to the caseworker. Use our Bundler — categorisation is automated based on the visa route.

Appointment booked but documents not uploaded

You can attend the appointment without uploading documents in advance — but if you do, you'll have to upload at the centre, which costs extra and is slower. Upload online before attending.

Premium service confusion

UKVCAS offers premium service tiers — Standard (free), Priority Service (£500), and various add-ons (out-of-hours, scan-and-shred, etc.). These are processed through Sopra Steria, not UKVI. Don't confuse them with UKVI's own priority/super-priority visa-decision services, which are separate fees.

After UKVCAS

Once your biometrics are enrolled and documents are uploaded:

  • UKVCAS sends your data and biometrics to UKVI for processing
  • UKVI's stated processing time begins from this point (not from your visa application date)
  • You'll receive the decision by email; if granted, status appears in your gov.uk View and Prove account

Standard UK in-country processing: 8 weeks (Skilled Worker, Spouse, Family); some routes faster. Priority service via UKVI cuts this to 5 working days; super-priority is next-working-day.

Common questions

  1. 01

    What is UKVCAS?

UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services — the in-country biometrics and document service run by Sopra Steria on behalf of UKVI. Used for visa applications submitted from inside the UK (extensions, switches, ILR, citizenship).

  2. 02

Do I have to attend an appointment in person?

Yes — biometrics (fingerprints, facial photo) must be enrolled in person at one of the UKVCAS service points. Document upload is online but the biometrics appointment is non-optional. The IDV (Identity Document Verification) app is gradually being rolled out for some applicants but most still need a physical appointment.

  3. 03

What's the UKVCAS file size limit?

6 MB per file. Files over 6 MB silently fail to attach — no error message tells you why. Always compress to under 6 MB (we recommend 5 MB max for safety) before uploading.
