TL;DR
To get an Iceland Schengen visa from the UK you first register on Iceland's official portal (visa.government.is), then book a VFS Global appointment (London, Manchester or Edinburgh) to give biometrics and submit. Iceland is in Schengen but not the EU — the same €90 visa and 90/180 rules apply, and the visa works across all of Schengen.

Schengen but not the EU — does it change anything?
No. Iceland is in the Schengen area but is not an EU member, and applicants frequently confuse the two. It makes no practical difference: you apply for the standard €90 Type C Schengen visa, you're limited to 90 days in any 180, you need €30,000 insurance, and the visa is valid across the entire Schengen area — not just Iceland. The application simply runs through Iceland's own system and its embassy in London.
How to apply
- Register your application on Iceland's official portal at visa.government.is, linked from the Embassy of Iceland visa page, and keep the confirmation.
- Book a VFS Global appointment in London, Manchester or Edinburgh.
- Prepare your documents — see the full Schengen document checklist.
- Attend your appointment to give biometrics (fingerprints + photo) and submit.
- Wait for the decision — generally 15 calendar days once the embassy has your file, up to 45, plus VFS transit.
A mandatory online registration step
Iceland requires you to complete its online pre-registration before your VFS appointment — turning up without the registration confirmation can mean your application is not accepted. Do this step first, then book VFS. (Iceland also recently moved its UK service from TLScontact to VFS Global, so make sure you're booking the VFS centre, not an old TLScontact one.)
When to apply to Iceland
Apply to Iceland only if it's your main destination — where you'll spend the most nights — or your first point of entry if your trip is evenly split (see which country to apply to). In practice, most Iceland trips — Reykjavik, the Golden Circle, the Blue Lagoon or winter aurora tours — are Iceland-only, which makes Iceland the obvious country to apply to. If you'll genuinely spend more nights elsewhere in Schengen, apply there instead; getting this wrong is a common refusal reason.
What you'll need
The standard Schengen document set: a passport issued within the last 10 years and valid at least 3 months beyond your trip, the Iceland registration confirmation, a recent photo, proof of UK residence, confirmed travel and accommodation bookings, an itinerary, recent bank statements, €30,000+ travel insurance, and strong evidence you'll return to the UK — the leading reason these applications are refused for UK-resident non-EU nationals.

Common questions
- 01
How do I apply for an Iceland Schengen visa from the UK?
You first register your application on Iceland's official portal (visa.government.is), then book a VFS Global appointment in London, Manchester or Edinburgh to give biometrics and submit. You must legally reside in the UK to apply from here.
- 02
Is Iceland in the Schengen area and the EU?
Iceland is in the Schengen area but is NOT an EU member. The two are easy to confuse, but it changes nothing for your visa: the same €90 Type C visa, the 90-days-in-180 limit, and €30,000 insurance apply, and the visa is valid across the whole Schengen area.
- 03
Who handles Iceland visa applications in the UK?
Iceland switched its UK provider to VFS Global, with centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. The Embassy of Iceland in London decides the application; VFS operates the centre and collects biometrics.
- 04
How much is an Iceland Schengen visa and how long does it take?
€90 for adults, €45 for children 6–12, free for under-6s, plus VFS's service fee and €30,000+ insurance. Processing is generally 15 calendar days once the embassy has your file, up to 45, excluding courier transit to and from VFS.
- 05
Should I apply to Iceland if I'm visiting several countries?
Apply to Iceland only if it's your main destination (most nights), or your first point of entry if your time is split evenly. For a Reykjavik or Golden Circle trip, Iceland is the country to apply to — though most Iceland trips are Iceland-only.
