TL;DR

To track a Schengen visa application from the UK, use the online tracker on the visa application centre that took your file — VFS Global, TLScontact, BLS International or GVC World — with your reference number from the submission receipt. Many centres also send SMS or email updates. Typical stages are received → under process → ready for collection. Processing is usually about 15 days (up to 45 in some cases), so don't worry until your status has stalled well past that. "Ready for collection" means a decision is made, not necessarily an approval.

Where you track it

There's no single Schengen-wide tracker. You check the status on the operator that handled your application — the same centre where you submitted documents and gave biometrics:

OperatorWhere you check
VFS GlobalIts UK tracking page for your destination country
TLScontactYour TLScontact account dashboard
BLS InternationalThe BLS UK tracking tool
GVC WorldThe GVC UK tracking page

Each operator's tool works the same way: enter your reference / application number and your details, and it shows the current stage. Exactly which operator handles your country is named on that country's page — for example see the relevant country guide — and on the consulate's official site.

Finding your reference number

Your reference (or application) number is on the receipt or acknowledgement you were given when you handed in your documents and gave biometrics at the centre. Keep it safe:

  • It's what you type into the online tracker.
  • You'll need it to collect your passport or arrange courier return.
  • Quote it if you email or call the centre about a delay.

SMS and email updates

Most UK visa centres offer SMS and/or email notifications as your file moves between stages — sometimes included, sometimes a small paid add-on chosen at submission. If you opted in, you'll be pinged when the status changes, so you don't have to keep refreshing the tracker. The email/SMS still just reports the stage, not the decision.

What the statuses mean

The wording varies by operator, but the journey is the same:

StatusWhat it means
Application receivedYour file is logged at the visa centre
Under process / at the consulateThe consulate has it and is deciding
Ready for collection / dispatchedA decision is made; your passport is on its way back

How long should it take?

Standard processing is about 15 days from submission. It can stretch to up to 45 days in some cases — for example if the consulate asks for more documents, during peak season, or for certain nationalities requiring extra checks. See processing time for what drives the timeline.

While your status sits at "under process", that's normal within the 15-day window. There's little value in chasing it daily.

When to worry — and what to do

  • Status stalled past ~15 days → contact the centre with your reference number.
  • Asked for extra documents → respond quickly; this pauses the clock.
  • Travelling soon and it's tight → check the centre's options, but never book non-refundable travel before you hold the visa.
  • Refused on collection → read the refusal grounds carefully — see Schengen visa refused from the UK for your options.

Before you submit next time

Tracking is the easy part; a clean application is what keeps you out of the "extra documents" delay loop:

Common questions

  1. 01

How do I check my Schengen visa application status from the UK?

Use the online tracking tool on the visa application centre that handled your application — VFS Global, TLScontact, BLS International or GVC World. Enter your reference or application number (from your receipt) and your details. Many centres also send SMS or email updates as your file moves through the stages.

  2. 02

Where do I find my application reference number?

It's on the receipt or acknowledgement you were given when you submitted your documents and biometrics at the visa centre. Keep it safe — it's what you type into the online tracker, and you'll need it to collect your passport.

  3. 03

What do the different status messages mean?

Common stages are 'application received' (logged at the centre), 'under process' or 'at the consulate' (the consulate is deciding), and 'ready for collection' or 'dispatched' (a decision is made and your passport is on its way back). The tracker shows where your file is, not the decision itself.

  4. 04

How long should the status take to change?

Processing is usually around 15 days from submission, though it can take up to 45 days in some cases or at busy times. If your status hasn't moved well beyond 15 days, it's reasonable to contact the visa centre with your reference number.

  5. 05

Does 'ready for collection' mean my visa is approved?

Not necessarily. It means a decision has been made and your passport is ready to return — the outcome could be a visa or a refusal. You learn the result when you collect or receive the passport. If it's refused, see our guide on what to do next.
