Student Visa Processing Time in 2026

How long the UK Student visa takes to process — standard, priority, and super-priority service times, and what slows applications down.

By Mahadheer ManuUpdated Verified · gov.uk·

TL;DR

UK Student visa processing in 2026: 3 weeks standard from outside the UK. Priority Service (£500) cuts this to 5 working days; super-priority (£1,000) is 24 hours after biometrics. The September-October enrolment rush stretches standard times to 4-6 weeks; apply by July to be safe.

Standard processing times

ServiceDecision time
Standard Student (outside UK)3 weeks
Standard Student (inside UK, extension/switch)8 weeks
Priority Service (+£500)5 working days
Super-Priority Service (+£1,000)24 hours after biometrics

These are service standards published on gov.uk/visa-processing-times.

When the clock starts

The processing clock starts when:

  1. Online application + payment is complete
  2. Biometric appointment is attended at VFS Global / TLScontact (overseas) or UKVCAS (in-country)
  3. Documents are uploaded (or scanned in person at the centre)

Biometric appointment availability varies dramatically — in peak season (May-September), wait times in popular centres can be 4-6 weeks. Apply early to secure a slot.

Common delays

Inconsistent CAS details

The CAS reference and your application form data must match exactly. Mismatches in:

  • Personal details (name spelling, date of birth, passport number)
  • Course details (title, start date, end date)
  • Tuition fee amounts
  • English level certification

trigger immediate caseworker queries. Your university amends the CAS; you wait for processing to resume.

Missing maintenance funds evidence

The 28-day window must end no more than 31 days before application. Common errors:

  • Bank statement period doesn't show 28 consecutive days at the threshold
  • Statement window is too far before the application
  • Funds in the wrong account (parent's name without consent letter for Student route; accidentally in someone else's name for Skilled Worker route)

ATAS certificate missing

For postgraduate research in sensitive subjects, ATAS certification is mandatory. The Foreign Office's ATAS clearance can take 4-8 weeks normally and 6+ months for highly sensitive research. Apply for ATAS as soon as you have your CAS, not after submitting the visa.

TB test from non-listed clinic

Tests from clinics not on the approved list are not accepted. You'll need to retake at an approved clinic; typical 1-3 week delay.

Credibility interview required

Some applicants are called for a credibility interview to verify their genuine intent to study. Common triggers:

  • Sudden increase in academic ambition (foundation → PhD without gradient)
  • Choice of UK university not aligned with study history
  • Funding source not aligned with claimed background
  • Country with high pattern of credibility-driven refusals

Interviews add 2-4 weeks to processing. Most applicants pass; preparation matters.

Peak season volume

July-September is peak Student visa season. Standard processing can stretch to 4-6 weeks during this window even at major centres. Plan ahead — apply by June for September enrolment.

Priority Service specifics

Priority Service (£500) — 5 working days. Available at most VFS Global and TLScontact centres. Pay at application or add later through the centre.

Super-Priority Service (£1,000) — 24 hours after biometrics. Available in major centres only. Particularly useful when:

  • Course start date is fixed and standard processing wouldn't get the visa in time
  • University has set an enrolment deadline
  • You're switching from Student to Graduate or Skilled Worker mid-course

Note that priority services shorten the decision time after biometrics, not the biometric appointment wait. If the centre's earliest slot is in 4 weeks, paying for super-priority doesn't help with that gap.

What you can do while waiting

Outside-UK applicants

  • Don't book non-refundable flights until visa is granted
  • Coordinate with your university about enrolment deferral options
  • Check email regularly for status updates

In-country applicants on Section 3C leave

  • Your current Student visa conditions continue
  • You can keep working under the 20-hour limit
  • You should NOT travel outside the UK (Section 3C leave is lost on departure)

How to track your application

  • Online status check at gov.uk for outside-UK applications
  • VFS Global / TLScontact tracking for centre-side updates
  • Email confirmations at each milestone (biometrics enrolled, documents received, decision made)

If processing exceeds the standard maximum, you can request an update through contact UKVI.

What happens after the decision

If granted:

  • Outside UK: vignette (passport sticker) for 30/90 days of UK travel
  • Inside UK: digital eVisa appears in your gov.uk View and Prove account

After UK arrival, your eVisa replaces the vignette as your primary immigration status proof.

Speeding up your application

You can't directly shorten processing time, but you can reduce delays:

  • Apply 3 months before course start, not last-minute
  • Triple-check CAS details match your application form
  • Get ATAS clearance early if applicable
  • Use Checklist generator before submission to catch missing documents
  • Bundle documents in canonical UKVI order with cover sheet
  • For peak season — pay for priority service if the standard timing is risky

Common questions

  1. 01

How long does the UK Student visa take in 2026?

Standard processing is 3 weeks from outside the UK. Priority Service costs £500 extra and reduces this to 5 working days; super-priority (£1,000) is next-working-day in many overseas application centres. Course start dates create natural urgency in September-October.

  2. 02

When should I apply for my Student visa?

Apply 3 months before your course start date — that's when CAS validity begins. UKVI accepts applications up to 6 months before; some applicants apply earlier than 3 months before to lock in slot availability.

  3. 03

What if my visa isn't decided before my course starts?

Most universities can defer enrolment by up to 4 weeks if your visa is delayed but on its way. Beyond that, you may need to defer to the next intake. Apply early to avoid this risk; pay for priority service if your application is close to the start date.
