Marriage Certificate Translation for a UK Visa (2026)

TL;DR

UK visas accept any professionally-translated marriage certificate. The translation must be done by an independent translator (not a family member), include the translator's signed statement of accuracy, contact details, qualifications, and date. When you need a translation

You need a certified English translation if:

• Your marriage certificate is not in English (or Welsh)
• You're applying for a UK Spouse, Family, ILR(M), or Bereaved Partner visa
• The certificate is the primary evidence of marriage

You don't need translation if:

• Your marriage certificate is bilingual with the English version on the same document (common for some Indian, Pakistani, and Filipino certificates)
• Your wedding was in the UK and the certificate was issued by the General Register Office or equivalent in Welsh

What UKVI requires

The translation must include:

• Translation companies with professional indemnity insurance, most major ones (Lingoda, Translation Services 24, Document Translations) qualify

Common issues

• DIY translation, even if you're a qualified translator yourself, UKVI requires independence. Don't translate your own documents.
• Family translator, same independence rule. A family member or friend translating doesn't count.
• Translator missing contact details, UKVI may need to verify the translation; without contact details the translation is rejected.
• Translation without certification page, the translated text alone, without the formal translator's statement, is rejected.
• Photocopy of original alongside translation that's faded or unreadable, the original document scan must be clear so UKVI can verify against the translation.

Format

Submit the translated document as a PDF, ideally:

• Page 1: clean scan of the original certificate
• Page 2: the English translation
• Page 3: the translator's certification page
