ATAS Certificate for UK Student Visa: Who Needs One and How

Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate for UK Student visas — which courses require it, how to apply, and typical processing times.

TL;DR

ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) is a Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office security clearance required for postgraduate students and researchers in sensitive technical subjects. It's free, takes 4-8 weeks normally and 6+ months for highly sensitive areas. Your CAS tells you whether you need it; without it your Student visa is refused.

Who needs ATAS?

You need ATAS if your CAS states the course requires it. The CAS field is unambiguous — the university determines applicability based on the course's CAH (Common Aggregation Hierarchy) code mapped against the FCDO's list of subjects.

Subjects that typically require ATAS:

  • Postgraduate engineering (mechanical, electrical, chemical, aerospace, nuclear, materials)
  • Postgraduate physics, chemistry, biology, biotechnology
  • Computer science with cryptography or security focus
  • Mathematics applied to weapons or cryptography
  • Pharmacy (some specialist research areas)

Undergraduate courses generally don't need ATAS unless they're integrated Master's (MPhys, MEng) in a sensitive area.

How to apply

  1. Get your CAS from your university — the CAS lists the CAH code and JACS subject area you need to enter on the ATAS application
  2. Visit the ATAS application portal
  3. Create an account, fill in personal details, course details, supervisor details, research summary
  4. Submit — receive a reference number immediately
  5. Wait for the decision email, typically 4-8 weeks
  6. Download the ATAS certificate PDF from the portal

The application is in English. If your supervisor's name or course title needs translation, do this in advance.

What the application asks

  • Personal details — name, nationality, passport number
  • Course details — university, course title, CAH code, start and end dates
  • Supervisor name and email (the FCDO may contact them)
  • Research summary — typically 200-500 words describing the research focus, methods, and intended applications
  • Previous research history if any

The research summary is critical for sensitive subjects. The FCDO assesses whether the research could contribute to weapons of mass destruction proliferation or military advantage. Be specific and accurate; vague summaries lead to delays.

Common issues

  • Applying too late — ATAS takes 4-8 weeks. Apply as soon as you have your CAS, not after the visa is submitted.
  • CAH code mismatch — use the exact code on your CAS, not a similar-looking one
  • Supervisor unreachable — make sure your supervisor knows about the FCDO contact and responds promptly
  • Research summary too vague — be specific about methods and applications; vague summaries get held for additional scrutiny
  • Changes to research mid-course — you must apply for an updated ATAS if your research focus shifts substantially during your studies

What if it's refused?

ATAS refusals are rare but happen. If refused:

  • The FCDO sends a written explanation
  • You may apply for review within 28 days
  • The university may need to substantively change your research focus to qualify
  • If review fails, the Student visa cannot proceed for that course

Bundling

Once issued, the ATAS certificate is a one-page PDF you include in your visa bundle in the "Qualifications & English" category.

Use our Bundler to merge it with your other Student visa documents (passport, CAS reference, financial evidence, English certificate) in the canonical UKVI order. Run our Checklist generator for the complete Student visa list including ATAS gating based on your course type.

Common questions

  1. 01

Do I need an ATAS certificate?

Only if your CAS specifies it. ATAS is required for postgraduate students and academic researchers in sensitive technical subjects — engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, computer science with security focus, aerospace, and nuclear technology. Your university confirms whether ATAS applies on the CAS.

  2. 02

    How long does ATAS take?

Standard processing is 4-8 weeks. Highly sensitive subjects (nuclear physics, certain aerospace research) can take 6+ months. Apply as early as possible — without ATAS the Student visa is refused.

  3. 03

    How much does ATAS cost?

ATAS is free. Apply directly through the FCDO's online portal — no third-party agent is needed.
